What is Cryptosporidium?
Cryptosporidium is a tiny parasite that causes diarrhoea in humans as well as animals.
Other symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach pain or cramps, dehydration, vomiting and fever. Cryptosporidium is a waterborne disease often spread by drinking water, which is the most common way it is transmitted. There are many species of Cryptosporidium and it can live outside the body for long periods. Swallowing water contaminated with Cryptosporidium, such as from Swimming Pools, lakes and rivers is a common way that it can infect humans.
What is Giardia?
Giardia is also a parasite that can infect humans and cause foul smelling diarrhoea and stomach cramps, bloating and nausea. Giardia is one of the most common waterborne diseases in the United States. Giardia can survive for months outside the body and can be passed on by drinking unsafe water as well food and human contact. It is particularly common in areas of poor sanitation.
Contaminated Water
Both of these parasites are found in areas of open water like ponds, rivers and lakes as well as swimming pools, wells, water parks and spas. These parasites are quite hardy so survive for long periods outside of a host and are resistant to many disinfectants. Many filters do not remove the parasites so they can become quite a problem.
